Streetcar System nearly funded for Planning

IMG_3593With a last allocation of money from the Sacramento City Council coming Tuesday night, the funding necessary for comprehensive planning for a streetcar line between downtown and West Sacramento is in place.

The council’s consent agenda calls for approval for $1.5 million from a city fund being put toward project development for the streetcar, money that would get to an overall $12 million goal.

Photo Feb 21, 4 22 00 PMTrain passengers have been lamenting the longer walk and lack of parking at the downtown depot since the city moved the train platforms a few hundred feet north of the depot to make room for future development. Some riders have stopped taking the train. In response, city officials now say they might use part of the empty development site for temporary parking and a drop-off area nearer the platforms.

Sacramento Kings pay $500,000 to support Streetcar Line

Sac Bee MapThe Sacramento Kings have agreed to pay $500,000 to help launch a downtown streetcar line as part of a landmark deal with Caltrans to reduce traffic tie-ups that an arena is expected to cause on local freeways, state and city officials say.

The tentative agreement, brokered by the city, represents the first of several potential “environmental mitigation” costs the basketball team is likely to incur as it builds a $448 million arena in Downtown Plaza.
